Got inspired by a post by @sittingoverheredreaming about Bookstore AU. Disclaimer: I have never worked in a bookstore so some details are probably wrong.

“Where’s
the Cooking section?!”

Michiru’s
eyes never so much as glanced away from her monitor. “To the left, under
the large sign that reads ‘Cooking,’ assuming of course, that you can in fact
read and are not looking for picture books, which are located in the Children’s
section at the back of the store.”

“Well!
This kind of rudeness is unacceptable! I will be speaking to your
manager!”

Sighing
and resigning herself to some shallow attempt to smooth over the situation, Michiru
tore her eyes away from her online cart…only to see the affronted customer
already stomping away, presumably hunting down someone to take out her wrath on.
The odds were somewhat positive that the first manager in sight would be one
that would just fire her already, but
fate was not to be so kind. The middle-aged woman, now shaking her wicker purse
for emphasis and pointing vigorously towards the Information Desk, had found
Setsuna and mistaken her for a store manager (an event that happened almost
daily, and that Setsuna had given up on correcting months ago). The
green-haired woman took in the customer’s shouting and frothing without so much
as a blink, said something in return, and then began to walk in Michiru’s
direction.

With
a few choice keystrokes, her window was closed, and the store’s Help Directory was
back on her screen, as per store policy. “Michiru,” Setsuna greeted, warmer
than she probably should have given the circumstances, “I find that, once
again, I must appear as though I am reprimanding you to satisfy a customer. Pray
tell, what exactly was the problem with this one?”

A
small hair toss accompanied her reply: “Truly, I cannot help it if the woman is
incapable of reading our signs, despite their significant size and
user-friendly font choice.” The derision in her voice was palpable, and she
began to examine her cuticles, wondering if she should get another classic
French manicure at her appointment later, or perhaps something a little more risqué—

A
hand with maroon nails covered her own, and Michiru delicately raised her eyes,
feeling scolded in a way she had not felt since she was a very young child. “Michiru,
I understand why you took this job.” Setsuna released her hand, knowing that
she now held the younger woman’s attention. “I also understand that your
parents are capable of buying this entire chain if they so pleased,” she noted
with a rueful smile. It disappeared as she finished, “But, if you continue to
insult the customers directly, I can’t keep covering for you, and you will be
fired.”

Michiru
nodded in understanding, and Setsuna, appeased, left to continue putting
together the newest display table. Their encounter felt as though it had been
hours long, but her computer’s clock swore that it had been less than two
minutes, time always seeming to stand still or speed up around Setsuna
depending on the woman’s mood.

Yaten
chose this moment to return from their coffee break. “Did I miss anything good?”
they asked, settling into their seat, still sipping whatever godforsaken sugar
bomb was promoted this month at the café.

“Nothing
except the immeasurably slow crawl of time until I may take my leave, along
with the ever-surprising lack of comprehension of the average consumer,”
Michiru replied dryly, watching a snickering band of teenagers take several
Holy Books into the “Fiction” section, a steaming Rei not far behind.

“So,
the usual then,” they chuckled, cracking their knuckles. A customer approached
and, after a moment’s consideration, selected Yaten, the much less intimidating
option, to inquire as to if their store rented books, and if not, if they would
be considering it.

Only one hour, seventeen
minutes, and thirty-two seconds,

Michiru thought to herself, listening to Yaten explain the concept of a library
to the man, who insisted that the library wouldn’t have every book, so a rental system should be considered. “I will
personally put that suggestion in to my manager, sir,” Yaten retorted, the sarcasm
completely missed on the customer, who walked away seemingly pleased with his
invention.

One
hour, sixteen minutes, and fifty-four seconds later, Michiru clocked out and
plucked her purse from its resting place below the desk, unzipping it and
searching for her keys. “Excuse me,” she heard a voice inquire.

Retrieving
her sunglasses from their case, the reply came without her looking up to
directly address the person on the other side of the desk. “I am actually
finished for the evening, so if you could direct your question to my associate,
please,” Michiru replied in a tone that made it very clear that the “please”
was not so much of a request as a command. She was loosely debating just never
coming back to work as her hand closed around her familiar, smooth keyring, and
she raised her eyes to examine the customer, who was now babbling nervously
under Yaten’s bored expression.

“Sorry!
I’m, uh, it’s my first night, and I’m not sure where to go. Uh, I’m going to be
working with the kids, but there’s no one in the Children’s section right now,
so I’m pretty confused,” she rambled, running her hand through her short, sandy
hair.

Michiru
blinked. She had seen all manner of customers in her last week, but never one
quite so attractive. The corners of her mouth turned up in a smile that was half
sincere, half predatory, and in one deft motion, Michiru removed her
sunglasses, placed her keys back into her purse, and stood up. “Allow me to
assist you, Miss…”

“Haruka,”
the blonde replied, pointing to the nametag that Michiru had failed to notice. She
felt a slight blush rise, but fought it down and replaced it with a smile that
was a little too wide to be fake.

Perhaps
this job could have its perks after all.

SAM AS SOMEONE WHO HAS THOUGHT AND FELT ALL OF THE THINGS YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT EVERY TIME I HAVE TO LOOK AT A GIRL I THINK IS CUTE, I am also on Team Ask here. Snumple’s right about the distracting/missing things stuff, also we are all shy scared creatures deep down and if I had a dollar for every time someone I was scared to make a move on was feeling the exact same way, I’d be able to buy at least two meals at Burger King.
SO I SUPPORT YOU IN WHATEVER YOUR  DECISION IS AND ALSO IN THE FEELINGS
OF THE MOMENT but also sometimes it helps to remember that asking not
only ends the anticipation, but also it often ends the general air of
awkwardness for all parties, especially when both parties are cuties

OMG ROSE I LOVE THE AT LEAST TWO MEALS FROM BURGER KING MEASUREMENT. Also yeah that’s a GREAT point, one thing I’ve been trying to remember every time I start on “she probably doesn’t like me so I better not” thoughts is if she DOES like me she’s probably thinking the same thing (most things that make me think that are things I also do/did)

AND THANK YOU. I will try to remember that. I’d IMAGINE awkwardness will indeed go away once I don’t have the Kill Bill sirens playing in my head every time I do something vaguely flirty 😛

IF IT WERE ME, next time you hang out, I’d be like, “Hey, I don’t want to misread the situation, are we doing a friends thing or is this a date?” Just casually like that.

DOC YOU GIVE THE BEST ADVICE THANK YOU

I thought about this a lot during my down time at work (today was 50% do nothing but greet customers day) and I didn’t come up with anything so casual that didn’t sound too much like I didn’t like her

THIS IS SO GOOD THANK YOU SO MUCH

MY DEAR PRECIOUS SAM I’M ALL FOR ASKING TOO. I MEAN PEOPLE ARE USUALLY DISTRACTED WITH ALL THE STUFF THHAT"S HAPPENING AROUND IT’S SO EASY TO MISS NICE THINGS EVEN IF YOU WANT THEM. I mean I support you to do what you feel will be right to do BUT YOU’RE SO GOOD YOU DESERVE ALL THE NICE THINGS ALLOW YOURSELF NICE THINGS

docholligay replied to your post “docholligay replied to your post “wow I am terrible at this whole…”

YOU KNOW I BELIEVE IN ASKING

THANKS ❤ ❤ I think maybe I really should, I’m ready to move on if we’re going to be just friends (I hate saying just friends, I am HAPPY to be her friend, but YOU KNOW)

ANY ADVICE? My main misgivings are worrying it might be too soon and a second thing I’m putting under a cut to hopefully not be read by anyone who knows me in real life

she’s actually a coworker (not in any departments I work in, but same store), and I’ve talked around that because another coworker follows me, and it feels weird to be hopeful about a crush to someone who knows her (although at this point there is zero chance they don’t know exactly who she is, there’s no way I posted about someone ELSE who got back from Europe that day so this doesn’t need to be under a cut BUT IT IS ANYWAY just in case) (hey there if you happen to read this by accident or whatever, you’re really cool I hope none of these posts have weirded you out)

but anyway sometimes I feel skeevy because we met at work and hitting on people at work is gross so idk if maybe I should actually drop it?

(it’s not against the rules to date coworkers, just people in your department (I think) or anyone you have authority over. we’ve had couples in the store before) (the issue is 100% a moral one because I don’t want her to be uncomfortable at work or anything.) (The other thing is she’s looking for a new job so maybe I should wait? but that would feel weird too, like pouncing the moment an obstacle is gone)

(ALSO. if any of you have been around and happen to remember random ass posts from September, she is in fact that coworker I had a crush on who’s first line to me was like “so I see you back there in nook all the time.” I deleted that post somewhere along the way but I have the emails from replies and i’ve really wanted to mention that in case anyone remembered)

I think you made a Grade A Good Shit AU in the tags

Ahaha I am ABSOLUTELY going to write an AU based on my workplace someday, because too many things are too hard to pass up. I mean. Big bookstore AU.

  • Haruka working in the kids’ dept. Her saving grace is that she is SO GOOD with kids and does an AMAZING job with story time and that overrides her tendency to get short with the rude parents/nannies
  • Usagi working in the cafe SHOULD be a disaster but somehow isn’t, she does alright and is happy to be around the smell of baked goods all day
  • Mako REFUSES to work in the cafe, IT’S ALL SO FAKE AND BAD AND NO. She ends up where we have the cookbooks and gardening books, and is the absolute queen of shelving. (She could NOT work in children’s, because while like Haruka she’s good with kids, she’s far more likely to actually fight it out with anyone who doesn’t treat their child right)
  • Michiru gets a job at the main info desk to prove she doesn’t need anything her parents gave her. Michiru has to deal with customers. It’s beautiful
  • Mina either doesn’t work there or she has my job as event staff, because oh boy can she work a crowd
  • Seiya is an asshole customer who makes eye contact with Haruka as she leaves a book where it very obviously does not go
  • Yaten works at main info with Michiru, but they have perfected the art of giving no fucks. Also the art of saying rude things to customers in a way that customers only sometimes notice.
  • Taiki keeps trying to push her favorite poetry books on people. She arranges a table of them so nicely and points customers there. No one buys any of them. She keeps trying.
  • Meanwhile Ami puts together genre tables that sell GREAT. She never mentions it to Taiki. Taiki never mentions it to her. But they both know it is a competition and she is winning.
  • Sets is a head cashier (not quite management, but almost) who is always pleasant but a little melancholy. She is here while she gets her Master’s degree. Possibly she stays after she gets her Master’s degree.

I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT REI IN THIS

  • Rei gets put with the tablets/e-readers
  • Rei is actually kind of a technophobe
  • But during her interview she demonstrated she knew “have you turned it off and on again?” and BAM hired
  • She actually works GREAT for the main demographic that buys bookstore brand tablets/e-readers– old people (Usagi and Mina agree this is because Rei is an old lady herself)– except when old people  (mostly old white men) show their prejudices AND THEN IT IS A BAD TIME.
  • Also the security team has to be on high alert and catch people trying to watch p*rn on the tablets before she does, because she is incapable of following protocol and getting a guard and a manager instead of confronting them herself
  • Rei absolutely spends the first half hour of every shift downloading feminist books onto all the demo devices.
