I BELIEVE THAT IS A QUESTION BEST PUT TO ONE MICHIRU KAIOH
Do you think, under her transformation, Michiru is wearing shoes she bought when she and Setsuna were last out together?
Do you think sitting on the table at home are two cups of cold tea and the whisper of a conversation that will never be finished?
Do you think Michiru believed Setsuna knew? Do you think she’d rather the answer be “yes” or “no”?
Damn, that last question is haunting me. Because I don’t think Setsuna knew until it was happening (she absolutely accepted it and understood, in my mind, but if she had any idea it was coming I can’t imagine she wouldn’t have told Hotaru to stay with Sailor Moon or something. Pluto is always so protective of kids.)
But Michiru would desperately want the answer to be yes. It’s one thing to turn on someone who expects it, who understands that there are things you will always choose over them. Someone who loves you and believes the best of you is an entirely different monster. Michiru wants to be untouchable. Haruka is the one flaw in her armor, and she’d like to keep it that way. Except she’s already failed. She cares about the girls and the world more than she ever planned, and she cares a hell of a lot for Setsuna. Setsuna cares about her right back.
And now Setsuna is dead at Michiru’s hand, and Michiru needs her to have known it was always going to happen.
If she didn’t, Michiru had some real humanity, and she threw it away. She’s ready to damn herself, but she’s not ready for that.
