I once showed my dad the first two episodes of Utena, because he was curious about things I liked.
And afterwards, he said, “This isn’t that different from South Park.”
It’s been over a year and I am still deeply confused.

I once showed my dad the first two episodes of Utena, because he was curious about things I liked.
And afterwards, he said, “This isn’t that different from South Park.”
It’s been over a year and I am still deeply confused.
Utena: Look. Look, you aren’t going to win this. Utena is plenty cute and awkward and naive, sure, but she’s also badass and stubborn. She’ll beat you out of pure spite. She’ll kick your ass and steal your girl. Don’t fight Utena.
Anthy: Are you fucking kidding me. If you still think that it’s possible to beat Anthy, then you haven’t been paying attention. You’ll think you’re winning the whole time, and then you’ll stop to gloat and realize that she’s been fucking stepping on you. There is nothing more dangerous than trying to fight Anthy.
Touga: This is a harder one, but go for it. Fight Touga. Tactically he’s skilled, but the pure rage he ignites in you should be plenty enough to kick this fucker back into his tragic backstory. Alternatively, of course you can fight Touga. He’s already fucking dead and you have already won.
Saonji: FIGHT SAONJI. Do it. There will be few things more satisfying than kicking in his whiny little face.
Juri: I mean, go for it, if you have a death wish. Juri’s unstoppable. Even Utena never actually beat her. You’ll be too distracted by her incredible beauty and wisdom to even begin to match her speed. She’s like, canonically the best at fighting. You can try to fight Juri, but Juri will kick your ass.
Nanami: I personally would never want to fight Nanami, but you do you, bro. You can win this one.
Miki: Go for it. Knock some sense into this boy. He’s like twelve and he’s an ultra Nerd. You will win.
Akio: You have a personal duty towards everyone you have ever loved to fight Akio, and though it is difficult, he can be beaten. Godspeed, my friend.
Wakaba: Why would you want to fight Wakaba?? what the Fuck. If you touch Wakaba I’ll hurt you.
Some thoughts about Touga in the series vs. the movie have been sitting in the back of
my mind for a while. He’s not a character I see discussed a lot, so I don’t
know if other people have wrote about this before or not.
I’ve seen a lot of people make a distinction about series!Touga
and movie!Touga, and while everyone’s show and movie characters have obvious
differences, I think at the core they are all the same people with the same
basic issues. Touga, at first glance, seems to be the most different out of all
of them. I think we’d all consider movie!Touga a better guy than series!Touga.
He’s certainly more sympathetic, being dead and all. Movie!Touga doesn’t manipulate
Utena or abuse Nanami, and he seems to be an all-around decent guy.
However, I think his story is the same in both continuities.
In the series, he realizes he loves Utena, but his attempts to save her fail because
the only thing he knows how to do is replicate the same patriarchal behaviors that
he wants to save her from (ie, dominating her and making her his girlfriend).
In the movie, he dies trying to rescue a girl from drowning. In both cases, it’s
the expectations of masculinity, of “princely-ness,” that cause his downfall. Movie!Touga
has to try and save the drowning damsel in distress, because that’s what
princes do. Series!Touga replicates the abuse performed by his role model,
because that’s presented to him as the way to manliness and power.
This isn’t to say we should sympathize with
series!Touga the way we might with movie!Touga, but I think the similarities are
important. They’re two sides of the same coin, and together are a strong
argument for the ways in which masculinity and sexism hurt men.
“At times, love is strong,
so much it even wounds people’s hearts, but
in the midst of the courage that grants our dreams,
a light always shines forth.
Love is strong,
so much so that it can move people’s hearts, but
If we are together, then without a doubt
we can change the world, and everything will
become one power.”
