According to the original Sailor Star musicals, Usagi and Mamoru became an inter-class, homosexual couple during the Edo Period. Usagi was a young male fish dealer named Usanosuke Isshin and Mamoru was the feudal lord of Azabu Castle. After saving a young village girl (Edo Ami), they realised they were destined for one another.
