Sera Myu: okay, we gotta fill the Three Light’s songs with passion and make them upbeat so the audience is crazy about them!

Anime: uhhhh what do teens like? Elevator music? Let’s write the Three Lights some elevator music

AU where the starlights showed up the same time as the outers

  • OUTERS ARE WAY MORE OSTRACIZED BECAUSE THE STARLIGHTS ARE THE SAME AGE OF THE INNERS AND IN THIS VERSION THE GENUINE CHARM OF THE STARLIGHTS IS PLAYED UP
  • Rather than “everyone has a crush on Haruka” everyone has their newcomer they’re most interested in (perhaps to rub salt in the wound, Usagi has a five second crush on Haruka because baby’s first butch, but then Seiya immediately shows up and is gregarious and more of what Usagi really likes in a person and her idolization of Haruka is so short lived)
  • The Starlights do the reasonable thing and team up with the inners, because this is not their fight but when their fight comes, they want to have the most powerful people on the planet on their side
  • Minako and Rei don’t trust the Starlights, there’s too much they don’t say and Mina and Rei know too much about their own loyalties to not recognize the same ruthlessness  in someone else
  • They’re the main bridge between the inners and outers, being the types that Haruka and Michiru gravitate towards
  • INSTEAD OF HORSEBOY SUPERS THE SEASON END WOULD LEAD TO A SEASON ABOUT THE HUGE CONFLICT BETWEEN THE STARLIGHTS AND USAGI (and everyone else) BECAUSE THEIR PLANET WAS DESTROYED AND HOW DARE SHE RISK THAT FOR ONE GIRL.
  • you know that one stupid episode where Haruka and Michiru fight Usagi? That but with the Starlights and a season long and it’s justified because they LIVED the consequence she couldn’t accept as a possibility, it doesn’t matter that it turned out okay because they knew she didn’t feel the weight of it and they’re traumatized
  • Also just. THe whole idea of people who lived through their planet being destroyed seeing the awakening of a soldier who’s purpose is to destroy the planet. That’s some GOOD SHIT. And their sympathy would switch from the inners to the outers SO FAST, if the outers accept the starlights AREN’T the outside threat it’s a hell of a team up

@jay-lea: I’d love to see you write this! Mako would see past Taiki showing off and genuinely ask her advice with plants and it could be such a nice dynamic between them

I HAVE A DAY OFF TOMORROW I MAY HAVE TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO. I see them settling into a dynamic pretty easily, Taiki’s self-importance might be off putting at first but she’s genuinely passionate and that can make up for a lot in Mako’s eyes, especially when it comes to caring for plants (and other living things)

@jay-lea YESSSSSSS. I see her being just like, what’s cool here on earth? Poetry and flowers are beautiful everywhere I should probably focus on those AND THEN SHE’S SO PROUD TO SHOW HER PEERS WHAT SHE KNOWS
(Bonus points if she’s a little desperate to see good in the world in their circumstances and as much as she cares about the culture for their mission she just really wants to find something on earth to lose herself in)
(Bonus bonus if Mako knows something about trying to use plants to help your own growth from grief and she doesn’t say anything directly but developes a soft spot for Taiki as they garden together)

I think you could do a LOT of interesting things with Taiki

I WANNA TRY. I’ve always been hesitant to write much with the Starlights, but I’m at a point where I don’t care about an drama and and actually want to do the leg work to male sense of their backstory and personalities.

I’ve had THOUGHTS about Taiki for a while, mostly around her particular brand of awkward nerd, like, canon almost gives us hipster-lit-nerd Taiki, but it always falls back on making her rivals with Ami, which she IS, but it’s because they have contrasting types of intelligence, not the same (just like Ami CAN read Taiki isn’t BAD at math/science, but she’s not gifted in it and she can write circles around Ami, especially when it comes to creative stuff)

Granted I am absolutely basing this on that one episode where Taiki quotes poetry at Mako and Usagi (Whitman, I think?). THIS NERD LANDS ON A PLANET AND IMMEDIATELY STARTS READING POETRY IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES.

Also based somewhat on that ep, I pair her more with Mako than Ami, I think they’re complimentary.

I’m on a Three Lights Kick I guess and I just want to say that while the anime (and other versions? idk it’s been awhile) paints Seiya as Kakyuu’s closest companion, I feel like Taiki makes way more sense in that role. Seiya becomes the leader in Kakyuu’s absence because she’s the fighter and they’re in a war, but Taiki in everyday life is more of the second in command to Kakyuu. She’s an advisor, absolutely, and more importantly, a confidant. In what little we see of Kakyuu, she seems like she’d naturally gravitate towards more toward Taiki’s quieter artistry, even though she of course loves Seiya. And Seiya loves her dearly, but rather than being a best friend/girlfriends situation, it’s much more princess/knight.

Things you said that I wish you hadn’t

Okay I lied I’m posting this now since I can’t sleep.

As soon as Mina drags us into their game of truth or dare, I know there’s going to be trouble. If it had been just the inners, maybe it would have been fine. Fun, even. But they are here. I try to make an excuse. You wave it off. I know they’d never break you, but I’m not that strong.

It’s alright for a few rounds, until Yaten gets that look in their eye. “Michiru. Truth or dare?”

You flip your hair, ready for the challenge. “Dare.”

I really wish you hadn’t said that.

Yaten smiles. “I dare you to kiss the most attractive person in the room who isn’t Haruka.”

“Will you be providing the mirror, or should I summon mine?”

I bite into my hand to keep from screaming. This isn’t going to end well. Seiya shifts forward in her seat. If you choose her, I swear I’ll break something.

“While your narcissism is certainly entertaining, I hardly think that would count.” Yaten puts their hand in their chin. “We’re waiting, Ms. Kaioh.”

“And I suppose I’m right to assume this is to be a full mouth kiss?”

Why did you ask? You could have gotten away with a peck on the cheek if you hadn’t.

“Yes.”

My heart pounds in my chest. Mako would be an alright choice, if it came down to it. Thought maybe I only think so because I trust her; she’s too genuine to take anything from it. Even if you really were attracted to her. Are you?

“Well, there’s one objectively right choice, isn’t there?” You stand up. Choose Mako, I plead in my head. Or Usagi, she’s innocent enough.

But you don’t walk to either of them.

Or Seiya.

Before anyone can process your choice, you’ve dipped Mina from her seat on the couch arm and kissed her. Mina’s eyes are wide even as you walk away.

“Goddess of love and beauty, you know,” you say as you sit down next to me. “The obvious choice.”

“Well,” Mina says, “that’s hard logic to argue with.”

Your eyes harden. I can see revenge forming in your mind. “So, Seiya, truth or dare?”

I groan and bury my face in a couch cushion.
