Day 4 – Favourite Musical Scene

Oh dear, prepare for a lot of wordes. But mine is the beach scene before Sailor War in Shin Kaguya. This is a bit of an odd one, as I can’t stand the musical. But this scene is just amazing. Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa are off talking to a pirate and cats (sometimes I realise just how ridiculous the Kaguya musicals are), and Haruka and Michiru have gone off to hide that they’re ill as well, but Setsuna and Minako see right through them. The other six are there. They talk about what happened and that’s one of the reasons I love it so much. In the musicals we never really see them trying to work things out without something dramatic happening, or a song, which is why this scene is so fantastic.

Then we see Ami blaming herself, Manami isn’t my favourite Mercury, script problems rather then anything she did, but here she is just perfect. Ami thinks she should have seen through what happened, and now her friends have this illness. She’s heartbroken at the thought, we know from the manga, anime and live action that she didn’t really have friends pre-Mercury and so this is crushing her.

Rei then attempts to use her 6th sense, but nothing happens. She then claims that she’s useless as a solider. Mako also tries to use her powers and says much the same. But whilst Rei is upset, Mako just seems angry. It’s just so in character for them and I love it, but cry at the same time.

Then we have Minako. Erica is fantastic here, and I generally don’t think that many of the other Venus’s could have actually pulled this off. When she and Setsuna realise why Haruka and Michiru aren’t there she just crumples. But after the other three’s parts and are down she stands up and rather then voice her own doubts she shows her leadership side by saying that whilst they can’t transform, they can’t just feel sorry for themselves. It’s a reminder that Minako is more mature then the others, even if she hides it, she had to be because of fighting alone, and this is one of the few times we really see it.

It’s also nice to see the Outers take a step back here. Setsuna and Hotaru take part in the first part, but not in the second. It’s a nice change. So yes this is my favourite, because we really get to see more insight into the girls then we normally do get.

Day Six- Least favorite scene

I really dislike when the Inners try to take Galaxia’s star seed in Shin Densetsu Kourin. It seems out of character in a lot of ways. There’s a huge difference between how the Inner Senshi and Uranus/Neptune operate, and this scene ignores it. First of all, this is a huge risk, and I can’t see any Inner except maybe Minako taking it. If their plan had gone wrong, they could have ended up killing Usagi. Uranus and Neptune are very much about doing anything it takes, so it makes sense for them to risk their princess to save the universe. The Inners, though, would never do it, at least in my eyes.
Then, there’s the fact that they did all of it without telling Usagi anything. Rei and Minako, I can believe they’d do it if they thought it was the only way. But Makoto and Ami? Knowing that by not telling they’re going to hurt Usagi? No way. And then to have it be Ami’s idea? I think this is a big misinterpretation of her intelligence. Of course she’s smart, of course she could come up with this plan, but this scene ignores that she doesn’t operate on cold logic. Ami has always been a character who feels things, and the musicals usually portray that well (see all versions of the study abroad storyline). For her to have come up with a plan that was guaranteed to hurt Usagi’s feelings and could actually kill her if it went wrong, and actually carry it out throws that whole side of her away.

Who do you think was the actress who matched her role best?

Sakaguchi Yumii – Sailor Galaxia

(HEY ITS TOMORROW MY TIME, I wanted to get this out before I forget about it XD)

I know, I know, another unconventional answer! There are a LOT of actresses I think matched their roles the best – Takagi Nao, Hosaka Yuko, Inami Tomoko (as Mistress 9), and the list goes on. But to me, the one person who really embodied their character was Yumii.

Now, this might be a surprise to people: Sailor Galaxia is my favorite Sailor Moon villain. Hell, she’s one of my favorite villains period. While I love Mistress 9 to pieces, Galaxia just has so much sheer depth to her. She’s basically destroyed all of the galaxy, save the Sol System; she has this great, powerful and imposing presence. Hell, she even successfully kills 90% of the main cast (sometimes more, depending on the source material!)! But she’s also a strong soldier. She sacrificed herself to entomb Chaos (going with the Myu and Anime plot here), but even when she’s the totally irredeemable villain like in the Manga, I still love her.

To me, Yumii embodies everything that is Galaxia to me. I remember the first time I was watching Starlights, it was raw and I was kind of bored out of my mind. Nothing was happening and I had no idea what was going on. Then suddenly, Galaxia Gorgeous starts playing and I’m like “YEAH THIS IS MY JAM.” Then she came on.

I was enthralled almost instantly.

The sheer presence this woman has is astounding! Even through the tiny TV screen I was watching it on, her commanding presence bleed through. She was strong, she was cold, she was powerful – everything that is Galaxia. Her singing is great and her dancing is phenomenal, and I love the smirk she does. And her as Chaos!Galaxia…oooohhhh XD

I could go on about how much I love her in this role, but I’ll spare you ;D

Day Five- Favorite Musical Scene

If I tried to choose a fun or emotional scene, I knew I’d never make the choice. I’m going to say my favorite scene is the Crystal Tokyo bit in Kaguya Shima Densetsu Kaiteban for what it does for the musical AND for the Sailor Moon canon as a whole.

The Kaguya Shima story gets so much stronger with this scene in it. The original KSD has Chibiusa talk about what we see here, and both SKSD shows skim over Chibiusa’s conflicts with Neo Queen Serenity. But this conflict, especially when we see it, makes the other children’s story more poignant. (Especially since in the Kaiteban, their tragedy doesn’t make Chibiusa say she’ll try and get along with her mother more.) This scene juxtaposes KSD’s idolization of motherhood with an example of a realistically complicated mother-daughter relationship without damaging the overall message. The audience gets to see why Chibiusa runs off to the 20th century and how difficult her relationship with her mother is, but they also get to see that Neo Queen Serenity does love her, which is something the original lacks.

I also think this scene does something similar for Sailor Moon as a whole. I’ve always had trouble with the gap between Usagi and Neo Queen Serenity, particularly in terms of motherhood and her relationship with Chibiusa. How could Usagi, perfect wonderful Usagi, not be an amazingly affectionate and doting mother? How could she ever become that distant ideal that she is for Chibiusa?
Part of this, I think, is something I’m coming to terms with as I get older, but part of it is something this scene really made me understand. Fumina is such a wonderful Serenity, because she’s graceful and elegant while retaining much of that core Usagi-ness. It would have been easy to have her only be Usagi-like in the bits where she teases Endymion, but instead Usagi peaks through in the entire scene. Her frustration is a particular selling point for me. It’s toned down, but Fumina plays Neo Queen Serenity’s exasperation very similar to how she plays Usagi’s. This really helps explain Neo Queen Serenity’s relationship with Chibiusa. NQS is mature enough not to snap at Chibs as quickly as Usagi does, but that annoyance still shows through. Combine that with NQS understanding the necessity of things she hated when she was younger because of her duties as a senshi and then as queen, and suddenly all of Chibiusa’s feelings make sense. Chibiusa is similar enough to Usagi to hate studying and brushing her teeth and all of those things, but I think she’s different enough that when her mother pushes her towards those things (with some annoyance), a part of her hears that she’s not good enough (at least early on; by the time this scene occurs she knows Usagi well enough that she knows she’s probably better than her mother was at the same age. Pre-Black Moon/R, though, I can definitely see it happening).

Translator’s Notes

Atavistic monsters appear in Tokyo and the Sailor Soldiers begin to investigate Infinity Academy, an elite academy owned by the mysterious Professor Souichi Tomoe. During their investigation, Chibiusa meets a new friend called Hotaru and Sailor Moon and her group encounter two new Sailor Soldiers… who attack them, the Sailor Soldiers become conflicted when they all have different opinions on how to deal with the new situation, meanwhile a group of aliens from Planet Grimm arrive to get the Silver Crystal and Sailor Moon must figure out who among the People of Planet Grimm, the Death Busters and the new Sailor Soldiers are allies and who are dangerous enemies…

This show is a retelling of the Infinity arc of the manga and is probably the musical which follows its manga counterpart most directly, even though it includes the Hoshino Family and reduces the roles of the Wtiches 5. Though perhaps not the best cast of the musicals, the plot’s fluidity and spirit more than enough makes up for it!
