I went out with Sailor Moon’s Usagi-chan and Venus’ Shiori-chan for dinner and to cause trouble.*

They’re so young!

Usagi-chan is not yet of age! **

I was presented with the 5 Senshi’s matching T shirt.

I’m not appearing in the performance this time, but because I also bought the outfit…

I plan on joining the mood!

Looking forward to it!

Notes:

* Not cause trouble literally. More like to fool around.

** You become of age at 20 in Japan. Meaning Satomi probably couldn’t drink with Shiori or Gaichi.

Sorry I’m Late- A La Reconquista Mini-Fic

I went to my parents’ grave. I didn’t know if I’d get a second chance to do so.
Makoto has something she wants her parents to know.

This scene has been at the back of my mind for ages, and I finally got it out. I hope you enjoy.

“Hi mom. Hi Dad.” She puts the picture she keeps in her wallet in the grass between her gravestones. The creases are too deep to unfold completely anymore, but that’s okay. The two crinkly white lines converge on her nine-year-old face so that if she doesn’t look closely, it’s like it’s just the two of them. It’s more like she’s really talking to them if she can’t see herself. “I’m sorry I haven’t visited for awhile. I’ve been busy.” Her fingers pull her skirt along her thighs. “I… I’m actually a soldier of justice. A magical girl like in the stories you used to read me.” She takes a deep breath. She aches to know their reaction. None of the others have told their parents, but surely, surely hers would have been understanding enough to know. “You always told me to be strong, Daddy, and I am. I’m strong enough to fight monsters and pull lightning down from the skies. But I worry that’s not eno…”

She shakes her head. “That’s not what I wanted to talk to you about. I want to make sure you know about my friends.” Another picture comes out, a photo strip with an English phrase written across the top. Minako said it meant “hot babes,” but Ami said it meant “friends forever.” Their five faces crowd into each panel. “That one’s Rei. When you’d first meet her, Mama, you’d purse your lips and say, ‘Well, she’s an interesting girl.’ She comes off as a little brash at first, but once you get to know her, you see she’s really got a big heart. You might know her mom. She’s somewhere up there with you.

“And Daddy, Minako would make you laugh. Everything she does is like a performance, even fighting.  She’ll be famous someday. She sort of already is. Before any of us found each other, she fought alone…” She shakes her head again. “You’d both love Ami. She’s a genius who gets top scores on all the exams, but she’s the most sweet and modest person you can imagine. She says she’s going to make sure we all get into high school. If you knew us all, you’d know how hard a goal that is.”

She points to the final girl in the pictures, the one who only managed to get her full face into the frame in the last shot. “And that’s Usagi. She’s… she’s the one who found me first.  We’re a perfect pair, really, she eats anything I cook and says it’s the best I’ve ever made. A little like you guys used to. We’re supposed to take care of her, but I think maybe she actually takes care of us. But that’s why…” Her fists ball around her skirt. “That’s why we’re going without her. They have Ami, and…”

She shakes her head again and smiles through her watery eyes. “I wish you could meet them so badly, but I don’t want any of them to meet you anytime soon. So I’m going to fight. And we’re going to win.” She carefully folds the pictures back into her wallet. “I just wanted you to know.” One drop of water hits the grass as she stands up. “And I love you.”

Hey Haruka what’s better than your SKSD outfit?

That’s what I thought.

Silliness aside, I see this outfit as a really good middle ground between Haruka’s anime and manga wardrobes. It’s no where near as feminine as the other girls’ outfits or a lot of what Haruka wears in the manga, but it’s not as masculine as anime Haruka’s clothes. It sits in androgynous territory that I just really like for Haruka sometimes. (Plus the shape and colors of the top are really flattering for her.)

(The girls are listing all of their own faults as “training)

Haruka: (dramatically) Having no faults…is painful as well.

Usagi: You are so wrong about yourself!

Rei: You admire youself too much. You lack a personality beyond the surface level!

Makoto: You go along with what others tell you.

Hotaru: You’re overconfident, but submissive.

Someone: And you’re always trying to look cool in front of women,

(Haruka immediately strikes a sexy pose to impress the ladies, proving her right)

Michiru: And your biggest fault is that you join in too easily!

Haruka: So what about YOU?

Michiru (avoiding the question): I have…my own training schedule…

Haruka doing her super sorrowful melodramatic voice about how SHE’S SO PERFECT IT’S A CURSE

claiming she has no flaws and everyone responding with a LAUNDRY LIST (including Hotaru calling Haruka SUBMISSIVE i guess we know her evaluation of Haruka and Michiru’s relationship) and Haruka immediately striking a seductive pose when it’s pointed out she tries to look cool in front of women…. Michiru avoiding having to list her own flaws…

.just, this will always best Myu moment, sorry. Acknowledging these two for the melodramatic teenybopper dweebs they are

Haruka and Michiru are flawed and melodramatic, but perfect in their dorky flawedness

WAILS

THEY JUST HAD TO DO A SEQUEL

in simple terms, it might look like Haruka loves Michiru less, since she was willing to attack her when she was a vampire, and Michiru was clearly not willing to attack her in the same situation. Or, as Michiru seems to think, it means Haruka is more “strong” than she is. But I really don’t think it’s that simple. It’s just a difference in the way they relate to each other.

It’s sort of similar to how Michiru held them both to this “I want us both to leave each other behind if it gets bad so one of us can survive to carry on the Mission” when she never planned to hold that up in her end and always planned to sacrifice herself for Haruka if it came down to it.  Haruka just naively believed her, but still freaked out and went after Michiru, and followed Michiru when Michiru died.

Haruka has such a black and white viewpoint of things and refused to acknowledge her own selfishness. The difference is Michiru does acknowledge her own selfishness, that everything she does is not for The Mission. I think the difference between the two situations is that neither of them can stand seeing the other corrupted and will do anything to stop seeing that, but Haruka is less honest about that.

If Michiru’s become a vampire, she is suffering. She’s been corrupted, taken control of, and that is the absolute worse thing in Haruka’s eyes. She can’t be saved in Haruka’s impulsive, black and white world, Haruka can’t even think forward to this because seeing her like this is too painful. Moreover, Haruka sees it as Her Fault, because it has to be. So every second she sees Michiru like this is suffering and guilt and pain and Haruka just can’t stand it, it needs to end. She has to be the one to release Michiru to atone for past sins, the only way she can save Michiru is by fighting her because she is a soldier who fights, that’s all she is, and that’s why Michiru has suffered so much.

Michiru shouldn’t have to fight because she is beautiful and perfect and has smiles in her eyes. Haruka will end this for both of them, but first she’ll make a big guilt-trippy speech about how she is the worst girlfriend ever and i’m so sorry Michiru it must have been the worst for you to be with me and i failed you but It’s okay now. I don’t think Haruka expected to survive fighting Michiru, or at least not long after. She would have kept fighting until she joined Michiru, because that was what she deserved, that was the release waiting for both of them. But she had to fight Michiru because that’s what she does, it was the only thing she was ever suited for in her mind, and she certainly couldn’t stand to ever see Michiru in pain for a second. So she’ll do it, under the name of her duty and that she must be the one to bear the burden, because that’s the easiest way to frame it in her world. Haruka feels guilty and horrible seeing Michiru like this, feels horrible about herself and being the one to fight Michiru is how she punishes herself for what she thinks are her failings.

But Michiru is honest about her feelings and her selfishness to herself. She may see that as weakness, but it’s really the same thing Haruka feels. She cannot stand to see Haruka like this, nor can she stand to pass off the fight to someone else. So she’ll take the attack, she’ll end things for them here. And Haruka is a fighter after all, so let her fight till the end. Because Michiru can’t come up with the black-and-white justification of pretensions of duty that Haruka can. Michiru knows herself, she knows what she wants, and she’ll take the quickest shortcut to it. For Michiru, it’s different from Haruka. Yes, Haruka has become something she hates and her existence is now as a painful and meaningless puppet. But unlike Haruka, Michiru feels an existence where Haruka is alive, still fighting, is better than one where she’s not. Because if she’s honest with herself, she doesn’t want to see Haruka die. And she knows leaving Haruka like this is bad and Haruka wouldn’t want it, so accepting death is her way of punishing herself for that.

So basically, they’re both punishing themselves over what they see as their failings as partners, both trying to escape the pain of seeing the other in pain, but they go about it in different ways according to their personalities.

Day Twenty Eight- Favourite senshi costume?

Today’s image is from seramyuantics.net because I wanted the contrast between the myu and anime. I love Saturn’s original outfit in the anime/manga, so I love the details the myu kept– her sleeves, her brooch, her boots. But I also really like the different color choices. The black, much more than the red, emphasizes Saturn’s destructive capabilities (not that I’d want the anime/manga to change, because I think red works better in 2D than black would). And then the bottom of her skirt is white to contrast the black, both thematically and color-wise. It just suits Saturn so well, and I have to say it’s my favorite because it is different from the other versions. (I like the changes they made to Pluto’s as well, but they didn’t strike me as being quite as perfect.)
