Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Nineteen Twenty- Saddest musical scene?
So Sera Myu is the best at sad scenes. It was hard not to have this answer be a tie between this scene and Kakyuu’s death in Eien Densetsu and every Sorezore no Elegy. But this scene won out, because the kittens are so happy. They’ve been waiting for their mothers to come back for five thousand years, and here they are, finally close enough to embrace. The kittens are dying, they’re probably in pain, but it doesn’t matter because their mothers are back. And the mothers. God, I want to give these actresses every award. Their faces show everything in this scene. They’re happy, they’re regretful, they’re terrified. They left their children alone for 5000 years. They left them, but they’re forgiven. They’re forgiven, but their children are dying in their arms.
5000 years of waiting. They get to be together less than five minutes.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Twenty Nineteen- Favorite Three Lights Song (I double checked and realized I mixed up today and tomorrow, but because I have an essay due tomorrow (and had two due today) I’m leaving them switched.) I really love both Myu Three LIghts songs (at least, as they’re performed in the First Stage), but See Me Boku Tachi No Jidai is easily my favorite. It’s bright and fun and catchy as hell, but it has that core of sadness that fits with the Starlights so perfectly. And it gives all three of them solo bits, which I love to pieces.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Eighteen- Which Sailor Moon actress matched Usagi’s character the most?
This sort of question is always hard to answer, because I feel all the Moons were so amazining. Marina was so adorable and energetic, Fumina was elegant and really captured Usagi’s more mature side, and Anza was Anza and just so amazing at everything. But Miyuki is the perfect Usagi for me. I think it’s because she really captured that Usagi is a school girl warrior. She’s young enough to think failing her english test and being unable to go on vacation is just about the worst thing in the world, but she’s old enough to face the real worst things in the world (the possibility of her friends dying, or the literal end of the world), and understand them and overcome them. And Miyuki captures the differences between those moments spectacularly. She’s loud and big and overdramatic when Usagi’s at peace, and she’s more subdued when she’s in turmoil. In both cases she just captures the heart of Usagi’s character so well. I really wish Miyuki could have done a few musicals that stuck more to anime or manga plots, because I would love to see in in situations we’ve seen more often (especially S/Infinity or Stars). But I’m grateful for the musicals she did do, because she did them wonderfully.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Seventeen- What surprised you the most in Sera Myu?
Hm. I can’t say that much plot stuff has surprised me (largely because I heard a lot about the musicals through tumblr before I ever watched). But there was one thing that never got spoiled for me, and that took me by surprise in the best way. I mentioned in the first day of this that I watched in a really random order. I actually didn’t watch the original Eien Densetsu until months after I saw the revision. Now, I cry a lot for both versions, but the original lacks a little bit of the emotional punch of the revision (particularly the senshuuraku). UNTIL THE CURTAIN CALL. I admit, at that point in my first watch, I was pretty complacent. I thought the emotional part was over after Densetsu Seitan. Then I got hit with this:
Surprise! Usagi is happy, surrounded by all her friends, having her dream wedding! I’m pretty sure I screamed. I have no idea how this was never spoiled for me, but I was shocked in the best way. I got to experience every Usagi-wedding feeling I’ve ever had with no warning.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Sixteen- Best Villain and Group Song
My favorite villain song changes very frequently, so if I’m ever asked again I’ll probably have a different answer. Right now I’m going with “Guoul Guoul Guoula” because it creeps me out and makes me want to join in at the same time. Most other villain songs do the latter, but while they do capture character very well, this is the only one that I actively find creepy. Part of that is the way the Quartet interacts with the other characters within the song, which I find brilliant. The Quartet seems to have the upper hand with their childish insults, but they’re dealing with two people who have been undead for centuries, one of which was infamous for killing young girls. The context gives me shivers.
I debated for awhile if Sailor War Supreme counted as a group song, but since it doesn’t fall under any other day I decided it does. Because boy, do I love it. I love the different divisions it has– Solar System Senshi from the Starlights, Inner Senshi from Outer Senshi, Pluto and Saturn from everyone. But even more I love that it shows the divisions to emphasize their unity. Everyone gets their turn to say who they are, but in the beginning, when they question if the Starlights are a threat to their princess and their planet, the Inner and Outer Senshi are together, and in the end, everyone is together. Because in the end, all real Sailor Senshi have the same goal– to protect their loved ones. Whatever differences they have– in origin, in methods– they always have that in common.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Thirteen- If you were the director, tell me one thing you would have done differently
This is one of the easier days, I think. That might be because I didn’t want my answer to have anything to do with story lines or anything big, though. If I were the director, I’d put in more small moments for Makoto and Usagi’s friendship. For all of the other inner senshi’s relationship with Usagi, I feel like the musicals eventually got it down (Ami they did great with from the start, of course, and Rei soon after, and the later stages did Minako brilliantly), but I never got quite the right vibe for Mako and Usagi. They did the mutually-boycrazy bits just fine, but they’re more than that. I’d want to put in more little moments where Mako is sympathetic and gentle towards Usagi (I’d definitely take out the times when Mako is harsh to Usagi; seeing her yell and hit her just makes me so sad the few times it happens), and put in more moments where Mako is protective of Usagi in and out of battle. …Basically, I’d put in a Mako/Usagi hug every few shows. Or at least an occasional pat on the head.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Twelve- What is your least favorite storyline? Why?
I had to think about this one a lot, especially since I don’t want my answer to overlap with other days. So I’m going with…
What? What? I know. I love Mugen Gakuen. It has such a great cast, and great music, and some moments that are among my favorites. But all of that makes the storyline more disappointing for me. S/Infinity is one of the most dramatic arcs because of Saturn, but this musical feels painfully undramatic every time I watch, mostly because of the ending. The culminating moment, when Saturn awakens and everyone dies, is too quick. There’s no real fight against either. No one even tries to stop her from swinging the glaive. Afterwards, it’s just like, “Oh don’t worry, Usagi, you can just undo all of this with minimal effort.” And she does, and she even brings back the bad guys (minus of course Mistress Nine), which they have to fight again. It always leaves me feeling like, why was the destruction of the world necessary? It casts a shadow over all of the story that comes before it for me, because it builds up to nothing. Then there’s also the Hoshino family, who I feel detracted from the story even more. Their story is a sluggish rehash of elements the musicals used before (group after the silver crystal who aren’t actually villains, kids that die, etc.). They also supersede existing characters’ importance, like when it’s Alba’s death that triggers Saturn to awaken, or when Shintaro calls out to Sailor Moon when everyone’s dead, instead of any of the senshi. I find it frustrating, because there’s so many great things in this musical that I want to love the storyline. And I can’t just never (or rarely) rewatch it because I mean
If there’s a way to not want to watch this song in full context every so often, I don’t want to know it.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day Eleven- What is your least favorite myu song?
Mizusakiannainin no Game. The scene with it was emotionally jarring for me, and I just don’t find it pleasant to listen to at all. Basically for every other myu song, even if I don’t like listening to it, I like what it does in the musical . This one, though… I’m very glad they cut it from the revised edition. …No audio or screencaps for this one, guys, sorry. I can’t bear this song unless I’m watching the musical all the way through.
Sera Myu 30 Day Meme Day nine- Who is your favorite only musical character?
Loof Merrow (specifically Hikari’s version) is one of my favorite characters in anything ever, so of course she’s my favorite invention of the myu. Everything about her is so heartbreaking for me. She survived 5,000 years alone, fighting as a pirate so that she’d be ready if Coatl came back. She’s rough, she’s guarded, but the moment a real human being shows her compassion, she falls in love. The way Hikari plays the love pain scene is one of my favorite things in the world. It’s easy to make that sort of thing seem a bit pathetic (which is how it came across for me in SKSD), but she makes it serious. This is a woman whose only companions have been androids for so long that she’s forgotten what human love is like. It hurts and she can’t place the feeling right away because she’s so used to being alone. And I love so much that falling in love doesn’t make her lose her rough edges. She stays a fighter to the very end.
Then it gets even more painful because she’d never ask Endymion to love her back. She barely even reacts when she hears he has a daughter (and therefore likely has a wife or lover). I don’t think she had enough of an expectation that he’d love her to get very surprised or jealous. And even though she doesn’t ask him for anything, she’s willing to give so much. Her final sacrifice is of course for the good of the entire planet, but it’s also for him– she says straight out that she wants to protect the future that he comes from. The final blow for me is when she comes back in the end. She’s every bit the elegant and refined princess, and that means she never lost that part of herself. She spent five thousand years as a pirate and never forgot how to be a princess. That’s pretty amazing.
Day Eight- Who do you think was the actress who matched her character the least?
I have to go with Ayano Sugimoto as Sailor Jupiter. She’s adorable and I don’t think she did a bad job, but she’s just very much not Makoto (especially her voice). It doesn’t help that the Black Lady musicals otherwise mostly have a particularly well-chosen cast, and that the musicals rarely gave Jupiter any strong characterizing moments.
