I think the hard truth is that the villains actresses are zuka og, and they are the seniors of harumichi’s actresses, which explains why there were so many villains songs with a focus on kaolinite(she’s the most senior if we count tani out). I think this is the same reason why there was a twist in PE because saphir was demande’s senior in zuka so they have to balance their scenes out and give saphir more of a focus. It’s not really so fair, but hierarchy plays a big part in Japan….

Thanks for the info, anon, it’s good to have.

But I do still feel like they should have done *more* with the villains, if they had reasons for them to be on stage. The Kaolinite/Michiru/Rei parallel was GREAT, but it was the only new and interesting thing with the villains. The rest felt very basic. Which is sad, because there’s a lot that could be done with those characters! You mentioned the Saphir and Demande thing, and if this was behind that it’s a great example of making something great out of this hierarchy. If Kaolinite needed a certain amount of stage time, maybe the human and daimon parts of her could have been in conflict (which would mirror Hotaru in a really interesting way). Or if they could have included her step-mother type relationship to Hotaru, or have her be in love with the Professor (I wouldn’t normally be cool with that, but lol everyone should be in love with this Tomoe).

And speaking of Tomoe, I would have loved if the two seconds he and Tux talked about fatherhood and twisted love had been expanded into a song in place of one of his earlier songs (probably Chosen One that one struck me as kind of out of place). Like, I don’t usually advocate for more Tux time, but that was such rich ground to touch on! They’re two fathers who have faced losing their daughters and gone to great lengths to save them. Give me THAT.

I personally got annoyed by the amount of stage time the villains got. The full Witches 5 + Kaolinite + Tomoe + Death Phantom + Mistress 9 is a lot even when nobody’s getting resurrected or excessively long songs. I get that fans love them (I’m all about Eudial) but it took away the very little time we had for the actual Senshi and didn’t even really get us into their characters. That was disappointing, along with final battle being mostly just Satomi standing there I think UNV could’ve gotten away with more in medias res storytelling if it had really committed to it.l – that’s what LR had to do and it didn’t really detract from things that much. Just throw us in and let us watch it play out in vivid detail.

These are all good points. IIRC (from like 6 hours ago whoops) towards the beginning there are two villain songs back to back, which r e a l l y threw me off. And for as much stage time as they got, I don’t feel like they did anything new or interesting with them? (LR and PE had lots of villain time too, but LR was like, boy band!! BERYL IN ARMOR! and PE was like PLOT TWIST: SAPPHIR. (and also Rubeus’s arms)) I actually would have been down with them cutting the Witches 5 ala the Ayakashi sisters. (I like the Witches 5 but I like almost everyone else in this musical more)

And in media res would have been interesting, especially since we didn’t get much of an introduction for Haruka and Michiru anyway (and NOTHING FOR SETSUNA I’M REALLY BITTER ABOUT IT).

Now I’m frustrated thinking of all the ways it could have been better.

AGreed, the writing was weak in this one, too much packed in, it felt light in harumichi content…I mean basically you’re watching them in the background, I wanted them talking together and BEING together

Yeah. And I’d forgive it being light on HaruMichi if it was heavy on the Inners since they’re graduating… but it wasn’t even that? I feel like there wasn’t anything it *really* focused on. (I’d almost say Chibs and Hotaru, but it pulled back from that even).

I’d sell my soul to trade the HaruSagi shit for one solid HaruMichi scene.

Or even just the inners having more solid moments to be honest. I’m mad because PE did SO GOOD fitting character moments into a fairly tight plot. This felt so jumbled.

Well. Okay. Final thoughts for the night:

The writing was kind of lacking in this one? Both for the story and a lot of the songs. I’m not really sure why they chose to include/leave out some of the things they did.

All the actresses were on point though! I’m going to miss these girls so much.
