Michiru would say it
had started innocuously enough, if she believed that Mina were capable
of doing anything innocuously.
“Happy anniversary, you crazy kids!” She smiled widely as
she presented them with a brightly-wrapped package. “I know I shouldn’t get you
two anything, but hey, I’m feeling sentimental.”
“To Octopus Mom and Dad Mom. Love, Mina.” Michiru looked up
at her. “I daresay neither of us could pass as your mother.”
Mina winked and clicked her tongue. “And yet you’re
constantly nagging me.”
Haruka ignored them both and began to untie the ribbon at
the top of the box. “Mina, you didn’t need to do this.”
“Eh, I thought of you two immediately.”
Haruka opened the box and her eyebrows went up in surprise. “Oh
wow.” She pulled the first t-shirt out of the box, a bright red shirt with Lightning
McQueen on the front and, in big letters on the back ‘IF LOST, PLEASE RETURN
TO MICHIRU.’
Michiru glanced at Mina. “Truly, you shouldn’t have.”
Haruka handed Michiru the second shirt in the box. Also
bright red, emblazoned with a bright blue and yellow ‘McQueen Pit Crew’ on the
front. Mina had hot glued blue and yellow bows to the sleeves, rhinestones on
the collar, and on the back was a terrifyingly matching, ‘I’M MICHIRU’.
“For my favorite helpless butch and bossy femme. I figured when you went do to Gay Days at Disney, you could
wear these!” She leaned against the counter, grinning, “I know you were
thinking about taking Haruka this year.”
“Was I?” Her voice had the small note of a threat, but Haruka’s
eyes were already filled with stars.
“Babe, they just got the new Cars ride and I haven’t seen it
yet!” She vibrated with excitement. “And we’ll watch the fireworks and get dole
whips and and churros and giant turkey legs, and of course we have to buy
matching ears, and ride Space Mountain, and we can cuddle in the Haunted
Mansion! Why didn’t you tell me you were thinking about going? This is gonna be great!” She smiled down at
her shirt. “You’re right, Mina, these’ll look great! It’s cute how you made
Michiru’s all femme.” She looked toward the door. “I’m gonna go start planning.”
She skipped up the stairs, two at a time, bounding happily.
Michiru looked over at Mina. “Well played. Check, I suppose.”
“That’ll teach you to take Rei to the opera when you know we’ve
got a movie date.”
I just really like the idea of Haruka and Mako as bouncers
at a gay bar, sitting out front shooting the shit all night.
Haruka trying to give awesome big sister advice about girls
to Mako, who just rolls her eyes while Haruka tells her ‘how to be cool around
girls’ and stops just short of reminding Haruka that she loses her ability to
speak anytime a pretty girl her age comes through the door, and that she damn
near fell off her stool when that one teal-haired girl showed up.
It wouldn’t matter anyway. Last time she mentioned, all
Haruka said in return was, “Do you think she’ll come back?”
Dealing with drunk dudes passing by, trying to get him to
move on, until they both collectively lose their tiny reserve of patience, and
Haruka asks, laying a hand on her chest, if they’d like to be hit several
times, really quickly, or, and she points to Mako, once, but really hard.
Haruka and Mako walking home girls that get too drunk and
don’t have anyone to make sure they get home safe.
Chalk this up to ideas I love but probably will never fic
FLY MY PRETTY BE FREE.
One slow night, Mako is leaning against the bar and confides
to Mina, “You know, I think I might just be a lesbian. I don’t even think I
like guys, but it’s a thing people convince you have to do be womanl—“
Mina’s arm is around her shoulder immediately. “MAKO NO.
THEREIN LIES THE WAY TO MADNESS.” She points across the bar at Haruka, who is
talking loudly about her sweet motorcycle and her cool leather jacket, ruffling
her hair and decidedly not looking or angling any of this conversation toward
the teal haired girl sitting at the end of the bar by herself, sketching Haruka
on a napkin.
They both look away when their eyes meet.
“Months.” She presses her forehead to Mako’s shoulder. “I
have been enduring this for months. Do you really want this for yourself? You
deserve better. Be a bisexual, save your world.”
“Mina, you can’t just DECIDE what you’re going to be,” Rei
sets down the tray of glasses and puts her hands on her hips, “And lesbians
aren’t a monolith! You always jump to these ridiculous conclusions and you’re
SO offensive and I can’t even believe…”
Mina points over at Rei. “Exhibit C.”
“MINA!”
One night Mina’s slinging drinks and notices Haruka leaning
against the window as she sits outside, just glancing over her shoulder every
so often at that teal haired girl.
She sighs and takes out the Bombay Sapphire and tonic,
grumbling all the while. She throws in a lime wedge and places it in front of
her. “Here. This is from Haruka.” The girl looks at her. “The blonde bouncer.
She’ll deny it, she doesn’t want to be creepy, have a great night.”
The girl smiles and takes the drink, holding it up so Haruka
can see through the glass. Haruka waves awkwardly, and the girl walks over toward the window.
Mina goes back to the other end of the bar when Usagi sits
with her hands over her heart, eyes wide and brimming with pleased tears. “Oh,
Mina! What if they fall in love and get married and have kids and it’s all
because YOU made the first move? Wouldn’t that be beautiful??”
“Alternatively,” Mina began to pour a beer into a chilled
glass, “I don’t have to hear about her every day, and Haruka stops asking me
which flannel shirt brings out her eyes.” .”
