Specifically about why Ami, Rei, and Makoto get the SilMil flashback the moment they do.

Because why wouldn’t Makoto get it the moment she carries Usagi away from the car? She’s protecting her, and Jupiter protected Princess Serenity, that’s how this goes right?

Nah, I see it as a VERY DELIBERATE THING when the girls get the flash of SilMil connection.

It’s connected to their very fondest memory of the Princess.

Ami gets it the first time she touches Usagi when handing back Luna. That warm, gentle, casual touch. Sailor Mercury prized it so from the Princess. The way the Princess was so affectionate, so free and giving with her touch and her love. That was not how Mercury was brought up, not how she viewed the world, She can’t be giving so freely. She is a senshi, and they rely on her for data. She must always hold back, always be analyzing, always be aware of any potential threat that might come. But to the Princess love was everything, and freely given. It didn’t matter that Mercury had to hold back, because the Princess was always there, giving, showing her love to her amazing guardian, the most intelligent of them all. The heir to the most powerful kingdom in the galaxy offering her love unconditionally. That is why Mercury fights, what she must protect.

Rei gets it when her first sees Usagi – no, not quite, when she first sees how Usagi is LOOKING at her. Full of such love and amazement and admiration. Sailor Mars never expected such things. As a princess and as a senshi, she was committed to her duty. She didn’t see her prowess in battle, attending to the needs of Mars and to the Silver Millennium as anything special or unique to her. She did her work, performed her duty, because it is what she must do. But the Princess was always so impressed. Even when she did the simplest things the Princess always looked up at her with such awe and reverence. The heir to the most powerful kingdom in the galaxy never missing a moment to tell her Mars how strong she was, how hard she worked, how nobody else could do what she does. And how could it be flattery or falsehood with that beautiful, admiring look in her eyes? Who else gave such love so freely? That is why Mars fights, what she must protect.

Mako does not get it when she saves Usagi for the car (or from the errant baseball for that matter). She gets it when Usagi laughs, when she is happy with her new friend and her delicious food. Why would Mako get it earlier? Would Jupiter have pleasant memories of her Princess being in danger, of Jupiter having to protect her? No, it’s what she’s fighting to protect her FOR. For the Princess’s neverending joy. For how the Princess lit up all of Jupiter’s days with her joy and laughter over the simplest everyday things. The heir to the most powerful kingdom in the galaxy, laughing with joy whenever she ate delicious food, looked upon the planets in the sky, danced in the ballroom, or whenever Jupiter showed her the newest flower she had grown from her garden. Even in the moments when Jupiter was most tense, most aware there could be a threat and ready to throw her body between it and the Princess, the Princess still laughing and smiling and saying how happy she is just to be with her amazing, strong Jupiter. That laugh lights up Jupiter’s darkest nights. That is why Jupiter fights, what she must protect.
