Fun story: Yesterday I was making hamburger helper and thinking about the Black Moon arc coming up in Crystal and I was thinking about Sailor Pluto and Chibiusa and like their relationship and everything they go through in the upcoming arc and how like Chibiusa never felt respected or really seen as herself by anyone around her. And then because it’s been centuries of loneliness and powerlessness and helpless and she’s had lots of time to kill she winds up wandering into some incredibly obscure corner of the castle and there’s Pluto. And Pluto sees her and Pluto likes her and Pluto doesn’t hide pity in her face. Pluto is her only friend in the whole world. And she only wants to make people proud but she feels so inadequate and like such an embarrassment but Pluto never looks at her like that. And how Pluto has been standing alone, with almost no human contact, watching but never experiencing, for eons at the time gate, since she was a child stationed there by the grandmother of the current heir a couple reincarnations and at least two apocalypses ago. And how in her entire adult life she has never had the experience of family and then like this little girl… this little girl who of course she already loves in the far off way that Pluto loves the royal family just like stumbles onto her fucking ancient dangerous sacred Time Gate. It doesn’t even occur to her to talk down to the Small Lady of the Moon family or feel sorry for her, she’s just so startled and excited to have someone to talk to at all. And Small Lady turns out to be so special, so kind, so earnest, so eager to please, and Pluto just loves her. She experiences family for the first time in her adult life. She experiences love, the real interactive kind of love, for the first time. And Small Lady Princess Serenity has her only friend and Pluto has her only family and they have refuge in each other. And so of course, of course, when evil coercive terrible people take advantage of the pain of this sweet little girl, this girl who Pluto loves in a way she didn’t know she could love anyone, of course that is the situation in which, after eons of never getting involved, of standing lonely guard at the gate, she not only gets involved but, to save that girl because she is the most important thing worth saving, breaks an ancient taboo that Pluto knows will cost her her life. And of course, of course, when Chibiusa comes back to herself, when after years of showing no magical ability despite her pedigree she finally awakens as a Sailor Soldier and transforms, the first person she wants to show is her best friend in the whole world, the only person who she really felt accepted her without the power, but when she goes to show her best friend, she’s dead. And she died saving Chibiusa, and it’s Chibiusa’s fault, because Chibiusa wasn’t strong enough before and the bad guys are still out there and the battle isn’t even over and Pluto is dead, and she chose it, she chose it because Chibiusa is her family. And she loves Chibiusa, and it’s the first time she’s ever loved anyone, and so she chose it, and it’s Chibiusa’s fault and Pluto can’t see, she can’t see that the Small Lady finally transformed and finally came into her power and is safe and okay now like she died for but Pluto isn’t there and everything Chibiusa ever wanted doesn’t matter any more now that she’s lost this most precious person and that’s how I ended up crying into my hamburger skillet and burning my stroganoff.

and the whole Neo Queen Serenity sending Chibiusa back for more training and to make friends is also treated as this jokey lighthearted moment but like when you think about it Chibiusa’s best and only friend just died and like some normalcy in a world where she isn’t a fucking princess might be the best thing possible for her and so she goes to the past and then she makes a new friend. Like her old friend, this new friend is also used to being lonely, but Chibiusa is becoming more like her mother every day and finding the lonely people and ending their loneliness and so she makes this new lonely friend who then is possibly a bringer of the end of days and who people want to kill to save the world even though Chibiusa knows Hotaru would never and she can’t, she just can’t, not after Pluto, she can’t let that happen and her friend is being manipulated and hurt and made to do bad things the way that she was manipulated and hurt but Chibiusa knows better than anyone that sometimes people in that situation are just reacting to terrible stimuli and aren’t really given a choice and like she already lost one friend
