STILL ON THE MICHIRU EPISODE TRAIN, I’d love something lighter, and it’s a pity that the anime left the Outers out of SuperS because that would be prime team building territory. I wanna see episodes where Michiru starts a friendship with Rei beyond what we see in early Stars, and I’d be over the MOON if we could see her take Mako under her wing as a lady. (I’d actually love this for all of the Outers, they’re not a real part of the team and then in Stars they kind of have to be.) I’d love to see her try and connect to the girls after all that happened in S and kind of fail, especially since Haruka’s episode showed that she’s not the best at approaching people when she’s being entirely genuine.

An angle that I’d find interesting but wouldn’t ever be something the show would go for, is if we can’t have the Outers in SuperS, have the conflict largely continue in Stars, and have the Starlights ENTIRELY hit it off with the Inners, even though the Starlights are ~secretly just looking for allies~. And then the Outers sense Galaxia coming, and know they NEED to work together with the Inners, and have that be an uphill battle of budding friendships and past hurts and bruised egos over OH BUT THOSE THREE ASSHOLES ARE FINE I SEE

if you could write an episode of sailor moon centered around Michiru, what would you write it about?

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT 😀

My first thought is an origins episode, set during S, and honestly the place my mind went for that is Minako vs. Michiru, because we never get a Sailor V origin in the anime either. And I think it would be a great way to play on the tensions already there at the time (I think, especially, when it’s post talismans reveal and the Outers are then still like, WE WON’T WORK WITH YOU).

So the conflict would come to a head with these two, because Minako is the most invested in having the team together, and Michiru is the least interested (Setsuna is just trying to do what’s right, and Haruka would love to be their friend if she thought they could). They end up fighting, all out senshi vs. senshi, and arguing over their attacks. Michiru naturally calls the Inner’s cushy, awakening with the princess and all that, so Minako brings up that she started off alone, and we get a flashback, and Michiru laughs in her face that there’s a difference between a cat telling you you’re a magical soldier and having daily nightmares for years until the panic pushes your transformation on you one night, and we get her flashback.

And as they fight we get more scenes of everything they’ve been through, the fights they fought alone and the doubts they had, leading up to when they meet her. For Minako, it’s Usagi, for Michiru, it’s Haruka. I’D LOVE A BRIEF SCENE FROM HARUKA’S ORIGIN FROM MICHIRU’S POINT OF VIEW.

The fight ends in a grudging draw, because both recognizes that they’re too evenly matched, and also have formed the tiniest bit of respect for each other. And the episode would end with Minako turning back as Michiru walks away, the slightest smile on her face, because while things are too much of a mess now, she sees a way forward. Understanding one another is the first step of connection.

ANOTHER CONCEPT: all non-finale arc episodes of either S or Supers end with alternating shorts done in simpler animation than the rest of the show: Miss Michiru’s Finishing School and Tennoh’s Teachings for Tough Girls. The first is played straight the entire time, with the inners fawning over Michiru and trying to do various ~proper lady~ things (usual gag is Usagi and/or Mina failing, but occasionally it’s Rei or Ami for a twist), and the later devolves into them proving they’re already tougher than Haruka. Mina brings in puppy pictures one day just to make her cry. She and Usagi are reduced to tears the rest of the short.

Eventually Haruka and Michiru start attending each other’s classes. The inners realize Michiru should have been teaching both the entire time.

CONCEPT:

An Alternate S/SuperS/Original Stars movie wherein the Inners notice Michiru is looking tired and seems busier than usual. So they go to Haruka and Haruka is distraught and clueless, so they team up because Something Must be Wrong. And then most of the movie is hijinks as they try to do nice things for Michiru and also INVESTIGATE, and they do find several Youma but defeating them does nothing to improve the situation.

And then finally towards the end they run into Setsuna and tell her the problem, she says she knows just what to do.

So they go over to Michiru’s house and huddle behind Setsuna as she rings the bell.

And then she just asks Michiru what is wrong because they are all worried about her.

Michiru laughs in the most lady like way while still conveying oh my god these idiots and explains that her brother is getting married on very short notice and she’s been drawn into the planning despite not wanting to go. But since everyone has been so concerned maybe they could be her plus… seven?

And the movie ends with everyone having a blast and being complete disasters on the dance floor at a Very Important Kaioh Event. Also Haruka and Michiru dance together and kiss, the end.

wrt Mako/Michiru/Nehellenia as a thematic trio, you could potentially spin that Mako and Michiru are afraid of the future cause while their friends have dreams that easily lend themselves to their basic natures (Ami’s already smart, Haruka’s adventurous, etc.) Makoto and Michiru might feel like they’re fighting expectations of what they are/should be, and feel like they can’t break out of those hangups as easily.

KEET YOURE A GENIUS I LOVE THIS
I love that it keeps to the dream theme, and it’s so absolutely true for them. Everyone else has obstacles to their dreams, but for the two of them THEY are the obstacle. Mako has a ton of baggage around the way she presents and wanting softer things from life vs what she feels is expected of someone her size and strength, and Michiru I think more than anything wants to be free, and while that ostensibly means from expectations from parents/society/senshi life, SHE’S what really holds herself back.

jiggliesrufflestein replied to your post “Thing that annoys me:
Beryl is a great reflection of Usagi’s dark…”

I kind of saw Ami having the Dark Moon because of the whole long life aspect, though it’s probably more the kind of science aspect of long life. Which would go like science trying to improve lifespans but I’m sure if I am hitting it right. Idk, maybe it’s just me being used to the anime more and Rei having the visions of the end of the world. Saturn’s destruction and fire can burn and be destructive (seems I’m rambling at this point but these were my initial thoughts.)

I like this take a lot! Ami and Rei are hard ones for me, because I feel draw to have both of them work like this for both arcs. Rei for Infinity could be really interesting playing against Hotaru and Mistress 9 for the reasons you said, and playing with the line between righteous anger, hatred, and cool minded destruction for a purpose (and hello father issues, though we don’t see much of Rei’s in the anime). And Ami for black moon could give rise to a lot of different things, depending on how it would play out.

She’s hard for me, for a lot of reasons, because she strikes me as the most… well-adjusted? of the Inners. Like, she has flaws, but she’s self-aware for a lot of them, so I have a hard time digging in to meaty storylines with her. (Though like, I do not know if you are familiar with PGSM, but THAT Ami, filled with self-doubt and jealousy, could play really interesting against a toned-down Demand and Setsuna, for ideas of loneliness and desire and how much can you try and possess things and how much can you hold yourself back)

Thing that annoys me:

  • Beryl is a great reflection of Usagi’s dark side, jealousy, possessiveness, two royal women seeking vengeance on each other. Good shit.
  • Galaxia can easily be a Mina-gone-wrong figure, they are both the best soldiers, they both feel overshadowed by circumstances and want more than they are given, if you told me Minako went rogue and took over the universe to prove herself it would not strike me as out of character outside of her loyalty to Usagi/Serenity
  • There are five inner senshi and five arcs/big bads
  • I HAVE BEEN TURNING IT OVER IN MY MIND FOR WEEKS AND I CANNOT MAKE THE REST WORK TO MIRROR OR FOIL EACHOTHER WITHOUT FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGING THE BIG BADS

OH MY GOD YES and I raise you the idea that both Haruka and Mina would do this, Haruka because if anyone must make the sacrifice, it should be her, and Mina because if anyone can succeed, it would be her

I’ve been grappling with the idea of inner-outer-baddie trios in each arc being highlighted for the sake of a theme, and they work BRILLIANTLY for the idea of what does it mean to be powerful and what does it mean to be noble. I also like Rei/Setsuna/some revised black moon clan memeber for the idea of how can you build a future you want, and what is inevitable. The rest gets difficult to parse out, though I have the slightest hint of an idea of Mako/Michiru and almost Nehellenia playing with the idea of who are you supposed to be.

I feel like the senshi can be divided into those whose civilian forms have a personal connection to their element (Rei, Michiru, and Mako on the side of plants) and those who’s elements are apt but don’t have the same connection, and a fun thought experiment might be working out how everyone could have a similar connection or draw

(* You might be thinking Mina should be mentioned as having a connection to love, but I think she has a super complicated relationship to it rather than a connection like, say, Rei has to fire, AND I think a connection to metal would be more fun to mine out (har har))

WAIT I LOVE THIS

I also had the thought of the gold/metal connection guiding her in similar ways, not in a ~easy riches~ way but in a little winfalls way, her pickpocket targets always have cash, she’s drawn to genuine precious metal jewelry in thrift stores when it’s unidentified, those little things

(Also damn a good fic would be Mina finding out somehow that things she thought were all her own, her charm and tenacity and personality, have been tied to Venus all along)
