For my fellow Pokemon Go-ers struggling with wifi only devices

I’ve found that my iPod usually only recognizes my location when I first open the app, but by swiping the Control Center up when the “GPS Not Detected” message appears, I can get it to start working again

The app still seems to crash more than it does on phones, but this has allowed me to catch a couple Pokemon and visit Pokestops.
