Update on my friend watching Crystal: He’s not sure he’s into it (he says it’s loud and bright and he’s impatient for more plot), but he likes the characters (especially Rei, which I sort of expected) so he’ll keep watching for at least a few more episodes.
Hopefully he’ll like it more as it goes on, but at least if he likes the characters he might try another version sometime :).
