27 FOR MINA REI MICHIRU AND HARUKA

THIS ONE IS FUN I’M GOING FOR IT

27.
How they’re mischaracterised

Mina gets simplified too much for my taste, she is so so many things and it’s complicated, she’s one of the least straightforward characters and THAT IS WHAT I LOVE. People give her a shinier, cleaner, more positive spin than I like.

I also get peeved with most flavors of Super Promiscuous Minako, because I so rarely feel like it’s done for anything besides OHOHO GODDESS OF LOVE and that’s less a mischaracterization as it is just ignoring all the stuff you can get into with that for her, PLEASE TALK TO ME ABOUT ALL thE WAYS BEING CASUAL AND OPEN IS NEITHER reALLY ALL THAT OPEN OR CASUAL FOR MINAKO.

REI IS MISCHARACTERIZED AS LIKING MEN. My hold on Rei isn’t as tight as on the other three, so I have fewer complaints.

Now Haruka and Michiru I’m basically FIGHT ME NAOKO because I hate softer characterizations for Michiru/ABSTENT charactizations for Michiru AND I HATE FEMME HARUKA AND I HATE COOL SUAVE CREEPY HARUKA THE MOST. Anytime Haruka is written as a legitimately cool person I just kind of can’t take it seriously. She’s a pure ridiculous noodle.

Haruka 7!

Favorite pizza toppings

I can see Haruka enjoying sausage and bacon/meat lovers, but I think she is less concerned with the toppings as she is with CAN SHE GET STUFFED CRUST? AND CHEESY BREAD ON THE SIDE? ALSO THE CINNAMON STICKS THING THAT THE BEST/WORST PIZZA CHAINS HAVE??

She only gets particular about toppings when Minako is ordering, because “I don’t care” always either leads to “I got anchovies because I know how much you miss Michiru” or pineapple, because Haruka is firmly in the pineapple on pizza is a sin  boat and Mina enjoys both the flavor and watching Haruka pick it off and whine that she can still taste it

This drops event is making me think about Haruka and Halloween, and OF COURSE Haruka loves Halloween. Free candy and dramatics? THIS IS HER TIME. She’s loved it since she was a kid and all her costumes were things like “baseball player” because that’s what she could put together on her own. And she goes all out as an adult, convincing Michiru to wear couples costumes with her and either going to parties or taking kids out trick or treating. what kids? Any kids, her neighbor has kids? She’ll take them. And when she has her own OH BOY. Those children are getting THE BEST costumes from the minute they are old enough for candy (and the second+ one(s) probably before, Haruka is buying those baby costumes or working a baby into hers) (imagine one year she’s a pirate and she dresses her littlest as her parrot. Just imagine. The little pirate family while Michiru is of course the siren who crashes their ship.)
Basically just. HARUKA AND HALLOWEEN HOW HAVE I NOT THOUGHT ABOUT THIS BEFORE

Yeah, I think haruka wants to be the solider because she CRAVES goodness, she wants to be called a hero, she wants to know that she did good, in her heart. She wants to know she did what was right, even when it was hard, and that she’s not a bad person for it, and I think a lot of her bravery and strength comes out of wanting that, of wanting someone to tell her she did good.

I have nothing to add here I just agree so much.

At Haruka’s soul level, she’s more a mama bear than a soldier–she’s ready to fight and die, for people she loves, but there’s no prowl in her, no raw cunning.

YES

And I think this is true for Haruka more than anyone else, even Mako, who is the archetypal Mama Bear but who I see as falling in line when needed and having just a little bit of that edge.

And funnily enough I can see Haruka WANTING it more than the other girls. While there’s a lot of wishing for ordinary lives, I can so easily see Haruka wanting to be the perfect knight, and she really never can be.

Do you ever think about how while Haruka is a good fighter she’s a terrible soldier, all those instincts passed her by, and there’s probably a moment early on in her friendship with Minako when they have a sleepover and some noise jolts Minako awake. She’s on her guard ready to fight but Haruka stays peacefully asleep sprawled next to an empty pizza box and Mina finds herself tucking a blanket around her and hoping she’ll never change.

One of my favorite things to think about/headcanon for Haruka is the care and pride I see her putting into making the best of what she has in regard to her presentation. Like.

Ironing perfect creases into her thrift store clothes

Gelling her self-cut hair to perfection

Spending hours on youtube learning how to tie a tie until she can do it without a guide

And then it all ramps up to eleven when she meets Michiru
