Mako who dies with a smile on her lips.

Smiling as she dies, too far away to be reached by Usagi. Dying alone in the cold Artic circle.

Well of course she is.

I figure that except for Usagi, all of them seriously considered the possibility they would not be returning from D Point once they found the location of the Dark Kingdom. They knew getting Usagi to the final battle was paramount, so if they needed to give up their lives at any point to ensure that outcome, I think they already knew it was a possibility.

But then Mako dies and no matter how much Minako and Ami and Rei considered this possibility it is still a shock. To see their friend die before them. The one they thought was the strongest of them all.

And Usagi, Usagi is ready to give everything up then and there. If only. If only she wasn’t the Moon Princess. If only she didn’t have this Silver Crystal. If only she hadn’t dragged Mako into this messed-up battle she never asked to be in. Who needs to save the world if this is what will come of trying?

But Mako is happy. She thinks she’s taken out all of the DD Girls. She’s done it. She’s served her duty, protected her princess. The way before Usagi and the others is clear now. Mako knows they will save the world. They are all so strong and so amazing, and Usagi, the princess she believes in, she would never give up.

Mako smiles because she think she is the only one who will die today.

And that’s fine.

It’s for the best really.

Mako doesn’t have anyone back home who will grieve anyway.
